Pacquiao vs Mayweather May Happen as Early as March Next Year

To Boxing fans worldwide: get ready for the “fight of the century”

ESPN Sport has just reported that  the Pacquiao – Mayweather fight might happen as early as March 13 next year.

Regardless whether you favor the technical defensive style of Floyd Mayweather Jr or the blindingly fast and frenzied attacks of Manny Pacquiao, this fight is something not to be missed.  It is  poised to become the biggest event for boxing in recent times.

Both boxers are excellent professionals and crowd drawers. They are both coming from recent victories:  Pacquiao completely dominated Miguel Cotto to win the IBO welterweight title while Mayweather came out of retirement to beat Juan Manuel Marquez. These were popular fights which generated 1.25 million ppv buys and 1.05 ppv buys respectively.   A collision of the two boxing superstars would draw incredible interest. To quote ESPN:

[It is] a fight many believe will break the all-time record for pay-per-view buys, which is the 2.44 million units sold for Mayweather’s 2007 split decision victory against Oscar De La Hoya.

Several cities are already scrambling to host the fight, with Las Vegas, Dallas and New Orleans in the running.  New York is out since Bob Arum, Top Rank’s honcho and Pacquiao’s promoter, said that New York taxes are too high.  Most likely it would be in Las Vegas, unless the other states manage some miracle.

Such a popular and lucrative fight would raise boxing to its former status as a premier sports. Overall, it would be very good for boxing and its future.

Roy Jones Jr TKO’d by Green in Round One: Time for Roy to Hang Up his Gloves?

It took just one round to end the championship match between Danny Green and Roy Jones Jr.   One round.

Although he was the challenger, Roy Jones Jr was heavily favored to  win over the champion Green.   This was Green’s first defense of his IBO cruiserweight title since winning it last August.  Jones wanted this Green’s belt since it would make him the first boxer to win all five divisions between both middleweight and heavyweight.

The first round started well enough with fighters sizing up each other with jabs.  A minute into the round, Green managed to floor Jones Jr with a vicious right.  Jones Jr got up but was obviously dazed.   Green sensed this and went for the kill, hitting Jones Jr with a flurry of blows while Jones Jr leaned helplessly on the ropes. The referee Howard Foster stopped the fight at 2:02  and declared Green the winner by TKO.

Jones graciously accepted defeat, by telling the crowd:

“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny.”

It was a bad loss for Jones Jr since it came so quickly and from so

meone with less skill and experience.  Kudos to Danny Green for a stellar performance.

The loss does not in any way tarnish Roy Jones Jr’s legendary status as one of the best boxers of all time. The loss meant one thing: age has finally caught up with the great fighter.  At 40, perhaps

it is time for him to consider hanging up his gloves and call it a day.

The Double Knockdown: And You Thought it only Happens in the Movies

In a scene straight out of an old black and white comedy,  the Cello Renda vs Paul Samuels fight delivered a very rare double knockdown. They met in the supporting undercard fight for Matthew Hatton’s IBO lightweight title fight last November 13.
During Round 3, both pugilists delivered perfect left hooks at the same, sending each [...]
